Wondering...

What can I make with this....by Wednesday?

When I read Kristine's blog about a first-day-of-school outfit for herself, I realized I don't have one! (Sewing's been on the back-burner this week as I start tackling summer school work and my own kid's last week of summer.) Then I was at JoAnn's and ran across this Robert Kaufman fabric that I remembered I wanted to buy. I've seen lots of music-themed fabric but this is the first piece that "spoke" to me (anyone watch PR this week? - feel kinda funny using that phrase now!). It's the first fabric that I could actually see myself wearing (as a HS music teacher) instead of using for a bulletin board background.

But what do I make?

1. Practical but obvious - a shirtdress. Easy, but kinda LOUD. Do I want the garment to wear me???

2. Practical but subtle with extra points for wearabilty - a blouse, possibly with ruffles? I've got lots of separates that would work with this piece. Can't you just see this with a black suit? - just a hint of my sense of humor peeking out for a performance.

3. Practical and functional - a jacket. Love this one; take it off, put it on depending on the situation. But the fabric is just a quilting cotton so it'll either be super-casual or super-interlined.

Maybe I have enough for a blouse and a jacket.

I love that fabric. From one musician to another. I would opt for a ruffled-front blouse. Go ahead make some noise (lol). We are considered "different" already.
(LOL)

My choice would be blouse as well - cute fabric!

what about a vest? I made one using well-washed/dried cotton flannel for interlining that is a long-time favorite. I used quilting cotton for the front panels.

I just love the fabric! I agree that a blouse would be a good choice. A shirtdressw ould be too much I think...'too much of a good thing' kwim?

I'd say blouse. It would be more sophisticated than the shirtdress, but still have a humorous edge to it.

A Mozart-y ruffled blouse. Definitely. I can see it in my mind, with the (archetypical musician's) black suit, and it will look fabulous!

I vote for the blouse. I like the one you posted there.

You have a great blog. I'd love for you to come and visit my blog. I just made a Vintage Vogue Original 1944 Design, V2858. On the previous page you'll find a dress I made from an original 1974 pattern that I found in an antique store. I call that post The Lady in Lavender. And lots of other things in between. Hope you enjoy.

That wonderful fabric is Not Loud. OK, it's so loud you could make it into anything, and still be able to hide in the brush. I vote for the long dress with short sleeves and an open collar.

I vote also for the ruffled blouse. If there is left over, maybe a shortsleeved camp shirt for those warmer end-of-year school days.
